I’ve been driving truck since Oct ‘98. I’ve pulled a reefer (refrigerated trailer) and dry van and had to deal with the hassles that accompany hauling produce and boxed meat. Including lumpers, refrigerated warehouses, farms and the stink of meat plants. Now I haul Special Commodities also called pad wrap or blanket wrap freight. Things that require special handling. Electronics, new furniture, even personal household moves once in awhile, trade shows and the like. It’s still a hassle, just a different kind of hassle. But there are good parts to it too.
Before trucking I was a Network Technician and Computer Programmer.
Computers have always been a hobby from my first Commodore 64 computer. I started trucking after having a short term contract installing and
upgrading computers in nursing homes all across Kentucky and Tennessee.
Driving from place to place I noticed almost every truck had a ‘help
wanted’ sign on it. At the time I was going through my second divorce
and had already lost everything from the first one. Starting with
nothing, I borrowed the money for school and started driving.
Six years later, I’m only beginning to understand the trucking
business. Having my own authority and being completely independent is
something I’m not sure I’m going to do yet. At the moment, I’m (mostly)
happy with the people I’m leased to.
I met Cindy online and after many emails and phone calls our first date was pretty incredible and it keeps getting better all the time. I talked her into driving with me after her corporate cubicle was such a disappointment. Driving and sharing this job is like no other. I loved trucking before, but didn’t like doing the “tourist” things by myself. Having someone else in the truck and in such a small space, changes everything. It’s said, that couples that drive together either get closer or end up hating each other. We’re getting closer, but we still need a little alone time too.
